Genetic (Co)Variances for Milk and Fat Yield in California, New York, and Wisconsin for an Animal Model by Restricted Maximum Likelihood
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two samples of data from approximately 4000 Holstein cows were analyzed by REML with a multivariate (milk and fat yields) animal model for first lactations started in 1970 through 1977 and in 1978 through 1985 and also for first lactation records started in low, middle, and high production herds in 1978 through 1985 separately for California, New York, and Wisconsin herds. Heritability estimates for milk yield (similar for fat yield) ignoring category of herd production were .29 for 1978 and later and .34 for 1977 and earlier. Estimates for low, middle, and high production herds were .23, .29, and .36. Estimates of genetic correlation between milk and fat averaged .62 for 1978 and later and .73 for 1977 and earlier; for 1978 and later these estimates were greater for California than for New York and Wisconsin, .70 vs. .58 overall. Phenotypic and environmental variances associated with low production herds were less than for middle and high production herds, but differences between middle and high herds varied by state and sample. The pattern of estimates of genetic and environmental parameters suggests that differences between California, New York, and Wisconsin are not very important for genetic evaluation procedures. Production of herds does seem important. R¢oeived March 21, 1988. Accepted June 23, 1988. L. D. VAN VLECK end M. C. DONG Department of Animal Science Cornall University Ithaca, N¥ 14853 G. R. Genetic Analysis of Milk Yield in Iranian Holstein Cattle by the Test Day Model
Using monthly test day records the genetic parameters of Iranian Holstein cattle in first lactation were studied. Data of 277400 test-day milk records from 65320 cows and 2210 sires were analyzed by an animal random regression model using restricted maximum likelihood methodology. The model included herd-test-date, interaction between year-season of calving, days in milk (linear and quadratic) ...
متن کاملEstimation of genetic (co)variances for milk yield in first three lactations using an animal model and restricted maximum likelihood.
Genetic relationships among lactation records are of interest because most selection of bulls is on first lactations. Selection also complicates estimation of genetic parameters. Techniques unbiased by selection should be used. Estimation of genetic and environmental (co)variances was done using restricted maximum likelihood with an expectation-maximization algorithm for an animal model. The al...
متن کاملVariance of interaction effects of sire and herd for yield traits of Holsteins in California, New York, and Pennsylvania with an animal model.
An animal model with a REML algorithm was used to estimate variances of additive genetic effects and interaction effects of sire and herd. Milk and fat yields were analyzed for first, second, and third lactations of Holsteins from California, New York, and Pennsylvania. Twenty samples of data were used in the study: 10 from California, 4 from New York, and 6 from Pennsylvania. Mean number of la...

In this research test-day records of milk, fat and protein yields of first lactation of 11368 Holstein cows were used to comparison of estimated genetic parameters by restricted maximum likelihood method based on single trait and multiple trait random regression models. These data were collected from 133 herds during 2001 to 2010 by Cattle Breeding and Dairy Product Improvement Center. Herita...
متن کاملGenotype by Environment Interactions for Milk and Fat Production Across Regions of the United States
(Co)variance components for regional production of milk, fat, and fat percentage were estimated via multiple-trait REML using DHIA data from California, New York, and Wisconsin. Data consisted of registered and grade first lactation yields of Holstein cattle from 1970 through 1984. Records were limited to daughters from sires common to the pairs of states analyzed. Averaged numbers of records f...
